Who I Am

Tin Shine Aung

Tin Shine Aung is a PhD Candidate in Sustainability Science at the University of Lisbon, affiliated with the Interactive Technologies Institute (ITI) & the Centre for Research and Studies in Fine Arts (CIEba). He currently serves as Consulting Director at the Shwetaungthagathu Reform Initiative Centre (SRIc), a think tank and consultancy firm. Through its Sustainability Lab, SRIc promotes sustainable governance toward a more sustainable future. He also serves as an Alumni Mentor for the 2024 Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Professional Fellowship Program, a U.S. State Department initiative.

He brings a wealth of experience, with over five years in academic research, three years at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and two years in the corporate sector. As a Knowledge Management and Communication Specialist at FAO, he contributed to the FishAdapt project, addressing climate change adaptation and disaster risk management in fisheries. He worked for two years as a Corporate Responsibility Specialist at CRYOPDP, a Cryoport Inc. subsidiary listed on the US Nasdaq stock exchange, where he engaged in sustainability initiatives within the healthcare and life sciences supply chains. 

 

He has authored numerous academic and analytical articles featured in scholarly publications and international outlets, including The Diplomat, East Asia Forum, Small War Journal, New Mandala, FairPlanet, The Sabai Times, and think tanks and academic forums such as the Central European Institute of Asian Studies (CEIAS) and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE Blog). His work primarily focuses on the intersection of sustainability, sustainable development, foreign policy, sustainable governance, polycrisis, and sustainability diplomacy, particularly in Myanmar.

In 2019, Tin Shine Aung was appointed to the Youth Advisory Council (AYC) for H.E. Scot Marciel, the U.S. Ambassador to Burma, emphasising his dedication to youth empowerment. In 2020, he was selected as a Professional Fellow in the YSEALI program, where he represented Burma in the U.S. and explored sustainable development practices.

As an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship alumnus from the European Union, he holds a master’s in Marine Sciences from the Abel Salazar Biomedical Science Institute of the University of Porto, Portugal, specializing in Marine Science - Marine Natural Products. He also holds a master’s in Biochemistry and a Postgraduate Diploma in International Studies (Relations) from the University of Rangoon, Burma.
